Secret of the ignorance

Folks,
Here are the range of articles Arati Menon Carroll has written for Business World. The topics range from Wines, fashion, metros, meditation, interior decoration, industry, current affairs and many more. Displayed at the end 🙂

I appreciate the zeal with which Arati is into this writing profession and journalism .All the best for her but does it not prove that she must abstain from writing anything and broadcasting her opinion on a national channel for as sensitive subject as Indian Classical Music(The article about the death of Indian Classical Music was written on Business Standard) in which she has got scant understanding of . Does it not show that she is in some way unnecessary biasing people who are still uninitiated into the beautiful world of Classical Indian Music and producing some kind of insecurity among the practitioners of Indian Classical Music as of today. It only impresses me by giving a notion that “if journalists and media men/women doesn’t have a news they would create it out of nowhere rather than sitting idle”.

I believe being a journalist and someone from media people like her have some higher role to play for the society and must definitely write only after doing some research on the same.

If media personalities and journalists like her cannot do something to uplift the beautiful tradition then they have no right to malign and creating a false impression in people’s mind regarding the same.

I am extremely sorry to read her producing the data for the musicians AFTER THEM WHO :and find that in tabla,Shehnai,Flute,Sarod she has not written successors while I at this moment can write 40 good musicians in each field.

After Them, Who?

  1. Dear Swapan bhai, I really don’t understand why u r so upset with the contents of the article u sent me. I couldn’t find things fishy in it. Being in the profession of journalism and the teaching of it for quite some years now, I found it to be researched. Though, I do acknowledge the chances of a fudged research. The authors seem to have contacted the ‘right’ people for their sources. Of course, I do not understand the economics of music (or any other commodity for that matter). Swapan Da, what we do on CMS is in itself a greater threat to the decline of sales than any other reason.Anyway thanks for bringing it to my notice.Bhadri.

  2. Dear Bhadri..I thank you for beautiful reply. What is CMS?Why I am concerned is that the working methodology of the journalists and media person is they’ve to write , and avoid sitting silent and idle at every cost. They write on every subject (manufacturing to business to travel to social cause to beer to sex to anything they may like ).There must not be denying that these people have a great power to influence the uninitiated and so on..When they write and categorically opinion about something then comes the problem..There is a great Indian Youth who is working harder and harder to establish themselves, leaving the life full of luxuries and devoting themselves to life full of music.Journalists don’t see these people and they don’t want to do anything to promote them either .But they are very agile when it comes to blaming, and exposing the grey part of music which in itself is not TRUE…..

  3. Dear Friend, this is the problem.Arati Menon approached Shubha Mudgal,Dr.Aneesh Pradhan :both of happen to be my immediate Gurus. Is there really any need to discuss “successors” and “inheritors of the mantle”? There is almost a touch of the feudal in these terms that leads one to wonder what we are discussing here – the future of Indian classical music or dynastic rule? Haven’t we seen time and again that genius and even brilliance can hardly ever be replicated in any sphere or discipline. This is why you won’t find successors for a Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, or a Subhash Chandra Bose, or a Raja Ramanna, or a Khushwant Singh, Mahadevi Verma or Premchand. Why then do we expect to find successors for Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Sahab, Vilayat Khan Sahab, Siddheshwari Devi and Begum Akhtar?

  4. Originality and genius have never been available at a well stocked super market, where objects are kept in stock and replaced efficiently at regular intervals. Originality comes and goes of its own free will, and therefore in due course of time mavericks will appear again in Indian classical music, some that will take inspiration from previous masters, and others who may reinvent, rejuvenate or create afresh.

  5. MOST IMPORTANT:Poor journalists cannot be expected to understand this stressed as he/she must invariably be in order to meet deadlines. All he could do was to make a few phone calls to the few undoubtedly dazzling names that he could think of, and who, unwittingly expose quite a few chinks in their own armours.Get the answers of the phone calls ..yeah I have experienced and seen this (in the name of thorough research) and get away with writing an article on a difficult subject to give more weight to your resume’.AND THIS IS THE ONLY THING I AM WORRIED ABOUT!!!!!

  6. Ha ha ha…Well written…Anyway, points of reference seem to diverge satrkly. Never mind. Thatz the way for a discussion – a healthy one at that.Without trying to invoke rather provoke a discussion on what you have registered about the value-loaded terms of inheritance I would like to say that, the authors of the article n the article have been given importance beyond their worth.

  7. Yes! Scribes have to write on any n every issue under the sun if they have to survive. The market itself has created this rush and its true that quality suffers.Secondly, the extent to which media influence the public is again exaggerated. The kind of influence that we tend to think the media wield is partial. I say this from a vantage position of being a media academician.

  8. Swapan da,CMS is Classical Music Sharing – the orkut community. Now, there are a couple of issues I could decipher from ur response.1. The working mind (?) of journalists in India.2. The damage an article against(?) ICM written by these journalists can have on the Indian Youths’ perception of ICM.Well, I myself am a journalist and hence do not completely accept your criticism of reckless journalism though I do not deny its presence. Strictly sticking to the rediff article, I reiterate that it was a well researched one. The artists being promoted, o of new artists cutting records, the sales of various major audio companies etc – all put together it definitely makes a sad scenario. If you carefully look at the people the authors have spoken to you would realise that they are the right people. So, the speculation or the scare that the journalists are working against ICM is unfounded.
